A major goal of CFEH is to perform detailed eye examinations, using the most advanced state-of-the-art instrumentation, for individuals particularly at risk of glaucoma, diabetic retinal disease and Age-Related Macular Degeneration. Early diagnosis of these diseases will mean the earliest possible intervention in the disease process to prevent or minimise long-term vision loss.
Risk factors may include a family history of an eye disease; certain lifestyle behaviours (for example, smoking); the presence of disease biomarkers, such as drusen in the case of Age-Related Macular Degeneration; high intraocular pressure in the case of glaucoma; or diabetes in the case of diabetic retinal disease.
