Glaucoma testing popular at Centre for Eye Health
February 10, 2010

Glaucoma is the most commonly requested testing suite among eye-health practitioners referring patients to the new Centre for Eye Health (CFEH) in Sydney.

Of the 100 people already referred to the Centre since its opening last November, more than half were tested for glaucoma, according to CFEH Director, Professor Michael Kalloniatis.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. At present, an estimated 50% of people with glaucoma in Australia are undiagnosed.

"World Glaucoma day on March 12 is a timely reminder why the services offered by the Centre are so vital," says Professor Kalloniatis. "Using state-of-the-art equipment available at CFEH, we can assist in the detection of glaucoma early in the disease process, and also help eye-health practitioners to manage patients who have the disease."

CFEH aims to reduce preventable blindness through early detection of eye disease. It uses the latest diagnostic instrumentation for assessing the structural and functional integrity of the eye and visual pathways.

The Centre is an initiative of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT and The University of New South Wales (UNSW). All services provided by CFEH are free of charge to residents of NSW and the ACT, along with their referring practitioner.

CFEH is located at UNSW's Kensington campus. Special assistance is available to assist people who live outside Sydney attend the Centre.
